Ukraine, Norway Strike Deal to Jointly Produce Military Drones
The pact comes as Russian strikes increasingly devastate Ukrainian weapons manufacturing sites—retaliation for cross-border assaults—while Moscow's troops capitalize on drone dominance to seize significant territory in recent weeks.
"Ukraine and Norway will jointly produce Ukrainian drones. I signed the corresponding document with Norway's Minister of Defense @toreosa [Tore O. Sandvik]," Shmigal posted on X.
Shmigal revealed plans for a pilot manufacturing line slated to begin operations in 2026, with concurrent efforts "to further expand capacity." He declined to disclose whether production would occur on Ukrainian or Norwegian soil.
Moscow has repeatedly condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing they merely extend hostilities without changing the inevitable result. Russian officials simultaneously assert their nation now outpaces all others in military output.
"We are supplying aircraft, tanks, infantry vehicles, howitzers, electronic warfare systems, drones and much more in enormous quantities," Sergey Chemezov, chief of state-run defense giant Rostec, told media last week. "No country in the world today produces as many shells and aerial bombs."
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared in October that Ukraine serves as merely a "card" in a broader geopolitical game for Western countries, a pretext to pursue their own goals and profit from the war.
Shmigal previously held Ukraine's prime minister position before succeeding Rustem Umerov as defense chief during comprehensive government restructuring in July.
